A strange-looking meteor crashes in the woods of rural Wheelsy on the opening night of hunting season, just as boorish, blustery businessman Grant Grant (Michael Rooker), after being rebuffed by his beautiful young wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks), goes on an all-night bender at a local bar where he picks up an adoring former girl-friend Brenda Gutierrez (Brenda James). On a midnight stroll, Grant and Brenda find something mysteriously slimy. Poking it with a stick, the glutinous glob penetrates Grant's chest with a pustule-covered tentacle, embedding an alien parasite which immediately infects its human host.

After ingesting massive amounts of freshly butchered meat, Grant becomes a bulbous zombie (not unlike "Star Wars" Jabba-the-Hutt), arousing the curiosity of the local Chief of Police (Nathan Fillion), who always had a hankering for Starla. Meanwhile, Brenda spawns scores of gruesome, giant slippery slugs whose loathsome mission is to be swallowed by unsuspecting villagers.

Writer/director James Gunn ("Dawn of the Dead") combines creepy sci-fi creatures with voracious zombies in this unconventional, old-fashioned comedy/ horror genre. Along with John Gadjecki's visual CGI, Todd Masters of Masters-FX and Dan Rebert utilize squirm-inducing prosthetics and bizarre special effects reminiscent of '70s and '80s horror films.

Noted in the press kit: 1) so much skin-making silicone was used for the cannibals that the national supply was depleted, 2) many effects, including about 500 parasites, were made of a super-strong elastic material called thermal gel, originally developed for the adult novelty industry, and 3) some of the monsters were so large that they had to be constructed in an airplane hangar.

On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Slither" is a goofy, blood-and-guts-tainted 3, inevitably evoking feelings of repugnance and disgust.
