According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny Depp's production company has tapped Terry Zwigoff to direct and co-write an adaptation of the French novel HAPPY DAYS with co-writer Jerry Stahl.
"Pirates of the Caribbean" star Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Graham King's Initial Entertainment Group will produce Laurent Graff's story of a thirtysomething man who decides to leave his wife and children and check himself into a rest home. There he develops a special bond with an old woman suffering from terminal cancer, taking her on a special journey as her last wish.
"Johnny Depp asked me to do the film," "Bad Santa" director Zwigoff said. "He said he chose me because I'm very Hal Ashby-like," referring to the late director of the intergenerational romance "Harold and Maude." "I took that as a compliment. It's a very quaint, fantastical story."
