Paramount has set director Stephen Sommers ("The Mummy") to write and direct a remake of the 1951 sci-fi film When Worlds Collide.

Sommers, who last directed "Van Helsing," will begin scripting immediately. In the original, scientists discover that another planet is veering dangerously close to Earth, and they make plans for a small group of humans to leave the planet before the inevitable deadly collision.

The deal was made after Sommers talked to Paramount on his take for a film that's proven a valuable library title; it already was the inspiration for the 1998 films "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon," says Variety.

Let's hope that Sommers does a better job with this 'do over' than he did with 'The Mummy'. His retelling of that classic tale must still have John Balderston spinning in his grave. Instead of revisiting the true essence of that horror story he gave us Indiana Jones meets the WWE. Phillip Wylie's evocative vision of the end of the world & George Pal's cinematic treatment of it stand as two of sci-fi's greatest achievments. Sommers retell will be a SFX extravaganza to be sure. I just hope the weight of the story won't be lost in his apocalyptic acrobatics.
